PAT Testing
Behind The Job

What Actually Gets Checked During PAT Testing

PAT testing is two steps, not one: a visual inspection of the plug, cable, and casing for obvious damage, followed by an electrical test of earth continuity, insulation resistance, and — where relevant — polarity. Most failures are caught at the visual stage, before the equipment is even plugged into a tester.

Every item gets a pass or fail label with the date, so it's obvious at a glance what's current and what's due. We keep a digital register alongside the physical labels, so if a certificate ever needs to be produced for an insurer, letting agent, or auditor, it's a five-minute job to pull it up rather than a search through a filing cabinet.

FAQs

Common Questions About PAT Testing

Will testing disrupt our working day?
We can test around your hours, including early mornings, evenings, or between tenancies, so equipment isn't out of use when you need it.
Do you provide proof for our insurer?
Yes, every job comes with a certificate and item-by-item register that insurers and letting agents recognise.
Is PAT testing a legal requirement?
There's no single law naming PAT testing directly, but the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require equipment to be maintained safely — PAT testing is the standard, recognised way to demonstrate that. Many insurers and letting agents treat it as effectively mandatory.
How often does testing need to be done?
It depends on the equipment and environment — office IT equipment needs testing less often than kitchen appliances or tools on a building site. We'll recommend a schedule for your specific setup.
How long does a PAT test take?
A small office is usually done within a couple of hours. Larger sites or rental portfolios take longer — we'll give you a time estimate once we know roughly how many items are involved.
What happens if something fails?
We label it clearly as failed, explain why, and quote for repair or safe disposal. Everything else in the batch is tested and certified as normal.
Do you test both landlord and business equipment?
Yes — we cover rented residential properties, offices, retail units, and workshops across Glasgow and the surrounding areas.
