Behind The Job

First Fix vs Second Fix, Explained

If you've not been through a build before, 'first fix' and 'second fix' get thrown around a lot without much explanation. First fix happens once the structure's up but before walls are closed — we run all the cabling to every socket, switch, and light position, coordinated with the builder so nothing gets boarded over before it's in place.

Second fix comes after plastering and decoration — we come back to actually terminate everything: fitting sockets, switches, light fittings, and connecting into the consumer unit. Getting the timing of both right with your builder is what keeps an extension on schedule, which is why we'd rather be brought in at the planning stage than after first fix should have already happened.

FAQs

Common Questions About Domestic Extensions & Conversions

Will the power need to be isolated while you work?
Only for the specific circuits we're connecting into, and usually briefly — the rest of your home stays powered as normal.
How long does first fix take?
It depends on size and circuit count — we'll confirm a timeline once we've seen the plans, in step with your builder's schedule.
When should I bring you in on the project?
As early as possible — ideally once first-fix stage is being planned, so sockets, lighting, and circuits are positioned correctly first time.
Do you liaise directly with my builder or architect?
Yes, we're used to working from drawings and coordinating on-site directly with the rest of the build team.
Is Building Standards certification included?
Yes, we certify the electrical work to the standard your local authority requires.
How long does first fix take on a typical extension?
It depends on size and circuit count — we'll confirm a timeline once we've seen the plans.
Can you wire outbuildings and garden rooms too?
Yes, including outdoor supplies, garden offices, and outhouse conversions.
