"How much does an EV charger actually cost?" is the question we get asked more than almost any other — usually from someone who's just picked up their first electric car and wants a straight answer before they commit to anything.

The honest answer is that it depends on your property, but there's a real, predictable range most Glasgow homes fall into. Here's what actually drives that number.

The typical price range

For a standard 7kW smart home charger — the setup most homeowners end up with — you're usually looking at somewhere between £800 and £1,200 including the unit and installation. That figure covers a straightforward install: a domestic supply that can take the extra load, a reasonably short cable run from your consumer unit to where the charger's going, and no groundworks.

It's rarely a case of a cheap charger and expensive labour, or vice versa — the two costs tend to land in a similar bracket, which is why the total moves as a block rather than one part staying fixed while the other swings.

What's actually included

A proper quote for a home EV charger should include the charger unit itself, all fixings and mounting, the cable run from your consumer unit, a check of your existing electrical supply to confirm it can handle the extra load, and full testing and certification once it's fitted.

What pushes the cost up

Three things account for almost every quote that comes in above the standard range.

• Cable run length — a charger fitted right next to your consumer unit is cheaper than one routed to a detached garage or the far side of a driveway
• Consumer unit condition — if your board is old, undersized, or doesn't have the right protection, it may need upgrading alongside the charger (see our consumer unit upgrade guide below)
• Parking setup — chargers for on-street parking or shared driveways sometimes need extra groundworks or a different mounting approach than a standard private driveway install

Smart chargers aren't optional anymore

Since 2022, all new home and workplace EV chargers installed in Great Britain are legally required to have smart charging capability — meaning they can be scheduled and monitored remotely, and default to off-peak charging times. This isn't an upsell; every charger we fit meets this requirement as standard.

How long does the job actually take?

For a standard domestic install, most jobs are done within half a day. Longer cable runs, or any consumer unit work identified during the survey, will extend that — which is exactly why we always survey before quoting, rather than pricing blind over the phone.
