Partial vs Full Rewire: Which One Does Your Glasgow Home Actually Need?

"Do I need a full rewire?" is usually asked with some dread, and the honest answer is often no - a targeted partial rewire of the circuits actually causing problems is genuinely sufficient in plenty of cases. The trick is knowing which situation you're actually in.

What each option actually means

A full rewire replaces every circuit in the property - every socket, switch, and light circuit, run in new cable back to a new or upgraded consumer unit. A partial rewire replaces specific circuits or areas showing problems, while leaving sound circuits elsewhere untouched.

Age isn't the deciding factor on its own

It's tempting to use age as the rule of thumb - anything over 25-30 years needs replacing - but condition matters more than age alone. Wiring can be older and still be in genuinely sound condition, or newer and poorly installed. An EICR establishes actual condition circuit by circuit, which is a far more reliable basis for the decision than age as a proxy.

When a partial rewire is genuinely enough

A partial rewire makes sense when the problems are isolated to specific circuits or areas - an extension added years ago with wiring that doesn't match the rest of the property, a kitchen circuit that's been overloaded as appliances were added over time, or a section of the property with different, older cabling than the rest.

The condition on what stays untouched

A partial rewire is only the right call if the circuits being left alone are actually confirmed sound, not just assumed to be because they haven't caused an obvious problem yet. This is exactly why a proper survey and EICR-informed assessment matters before committing to "partial" - it needs to be a genuine finding, not a way to avoid the bigger conversation.

Why an honest answer matters here

A full rewire is a bigger job and a bigger bill, so there's an obvious temptation for it to be the default recommendation regardless of what's actually needed. A straight answer - including "you don't need the full job" when that's genuinely true - is worth more than an inflated scope, and it's the basis we work from every time.
